Phuket Beaches & Islands

The beaches of the south coast are typically crowded, while the north is far more tranquil. All the major beaches (such as Patong beach, Kata beach, Karon beach, Nai Han beach, Mai Khao beach , Nai Yang beach) offer instruction and equipment for diving, snorkling, wind surfing and sailing. Don't forget to notice red flag! before swim.

1 Bang Tao Beach

Location : West of Phuket, Thalang District Bang Tao Beach Bang Tao Beach is perfect for family holidays or a romantic get-away, there are tropical white sands with the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea inviting you in for a refreshing dip. Hotels & resorts available outside Laguna at the bay’s south end. Dry season swimming is excellent, and at the bay’s north end is a smaller bay, almost completely enclosed, at the mouth of which is some fine coral. Plenty of places to eat, tour companies, and other tourist facilities are available either at Laguna or in the nearby town of Choeng Thale.

How to get there
The route to the beach is not very obvious without a map as there is no parallel beach road, so you have to follow some small lanes quite a long way. When coming from Patong, continue past Surin Beach and just follow the signs to Laguna Phuket. Once you pass the Banyan Tree, you will shortly arrive at the beach.


2 Kalim Beach

Location : North of Patong Beach, Kathu District Kalim Beach Kalim Beach is a small bay with secluded beach dotted with rocks and coral reefs. The beach has extensive coral reef is better for snorkeling than for swimming and the views over the bay are very charming. Despite the more quiet edge to the beach, the vicinity to Patong Beach make it an ideal alternative for travelers who like to have a bit more of a quiet time, albeit easy access of the nightlife, restaurants and entertainment.

How to get there
Kalim Beach is a short distance from Patong. Songthaews leave regularly to Patong from the market in Phuket and cost 20 Baht per person.

3 Kamala Beach

Location : Between Patong and Surin Beach, Kathu District Kamala Beach Kamala Beach is quieter pace beach with a great atmosphere which located north of Patong beach. The northern end of Kamala beach is peaceful all year round and suitable for swimming while the southern end of the beach will get busy in the high season.

How to get there
Kamala beach is 25 kilometres from Phuket town.

4 Karon Beach

Location : Mueang District Karon Beach Karon beach is one most beautiful beaches and the second largest on Phuket. The beach is generally quieter and rarely crowded compared to Patong beach which it is perfect for sun-seekers, families and also fun-seekers such as sunbathing, swimming, and ride jet-skies. Karon beach has plenty of everything! From road-side restaurants, souvenir shops and wide range of accommodations from standard hotels to 5-star hotels and resorts near the beach.

How to get there
Karon beach is located about 20 kilometers from Phuket town and located near the north of Kata beach. Just about 10 minutes’ drive from Patong beach.

5 Kata Beach

Location : Mueang District Kata Beach Kata beach is wide and length 2 kilometres with clear blue sea which gently slopes away into the andaman sea. Many fish inhabit the rocks and corals along the beachless shoreline stretching south. Besides you will enjoy with sunbathing then you will enjoy with jet skiing, parascending, banana rides, water skiing, long tail boat excursions, and diving packages to local coral reefs from Kata beach. The beach has many standard hotels to 5-star hotels and resorts enough for tourist. South of Kata is Kata Noi beach, a smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development.

How to get there
Situated 20 kilometres from phuket town. You can take the narrow beach road up over the hill from Kata.

6 Mai Khao Beach

Location : North of Phuket, Thalang District Mai Khao Beach Mai Khao Beach is one of the most natural and quietest beach of Phuket. No night life activitie on this beach such as nightclubs and girlie bars. The beach is narrow and steep in places, but the sand is fine and water clarity excellent, making it good for swimming in the high-season. But like all Phuket beaches, it can be dangerous during the monsoon season.

How to get there
Mai Khao beach lies about half an hour’s drive away from the Phuket International Airport.

7 Nai Harn Beach

Location : South of Phuket, Mueang District Nai Harn Beach Nai Harn beach becomes a favorite spot for swimmers and sunbathers. The beach has white powdery sand and crystal clear water and also offers good scope for water sports such as windsurfing. The beach borders on two charming landscaped lagoons surrounded by rubber trees and other tropical plants. As the beach has not yet been fully developed to its full potential, it is less crowded, more peaceful, thus is ideal for people seeking solitude. Holidaymakers are not recommended to swim during the monsoon season from May to October. Watch out for the red flag! Despite having a rather limited selection of accommodations, they range from budget bungalows to the top-class Yacht Club. How to get there
Located a few kilometers from Kata Beach, next to Phromthep Cape, approximately 18 kilometers from town. This beach can be reached by songthaeos, which leaves from the intersection of Ranong Road and the fountain circle.

8 Nai Thon Beach

Location : Thalang District Nai Thon Beach Nai Thon Beach is quiet, beautiful and peaceful white sands which you will find the perfect balance between the basic facilities in the Sirinath National Park and the vast tourist developments along the beaches of the south coast. The beach slopes gently into the water which that is great for swimming and shaded with casuarina trees.

How to get there
Just only 15 minutes from the Phuket National Airport, you can get the quiet elegance of Nai Thon beach within 10 acres approximately of bounds.

9 Nai Yang Beach

Location : Thalang District Nai Yang Beach Nai Yang beach is located near Phuket airport and to the south of Mai Khao Beach. The beach is a serene and isolated bay ideal for swimming and family picnics. The beach itself is impressive, as it is fringed by shady pine trees. Nearby coral reefs make explorations into the underwater world worthwhile. In addition, sea turtles are inhabitants in the area. The parks headquarters is located here.

How to get there
To reach the Park, start from Thepkasattri Road and continue towards the Thalang intersection, then take a left turn at kilometer21 and 22 markers and proceed for approximately 10 kilometers. Alternatively, at kilometer 21 and 22 markers, follow the road which leads to the airport for approximately 2 kilometers.

10 Nakalay Beach

Location : West of Phuket, Kathu District Nakalay Beach Nakalay Beach is the private and secluded beach of Thavorn Beach Village. The entrance to the beach bears a DO NOT ENTER sign, clearly limiting it to the residents of the resort. Swimming is only possible at high tide. In the center of the Beach, a long pier has been built and the Nakalay Junk moores not too far away, providing both day and sunset trips as well as being available to be fully chartered for parties.

How to get there
Nakalay Beach is located in Nakalay Bay near the Patong/Kamala border sign and 4 km north of Patong Beach.

11 Pansea Beach

Location : North of Surin beach, Thalang District Pansea Beach Pansea Beach is a small secluded beach only 250 metres long, located at the northern end of Surin beach, on the north west coast of Phuket. To the north of this beautiful little cove is Bang Tao Beach.

Pansea Beach is one of the best beaches in Phuket, with clean white sand and crystal clear waters. Coral reefs are a stone’s throw from the beach and the magnificent rock formations on either ends of the beach add to the picture postcard effect.

How to get there
Pansea beach are about 24 km distance from Phuket town or 30 minutes by car from Patong Beach on the west coast of the island.

12 Patong Beach

Location : Kathu District Patong Beach Patong beach is most popular beach of Phuket and have variety of activities and nightlife which includes restaurants, beer bars, gogo bars and discos. Patong beach lenght 3 kilometer with long white sandy beach that is perfect for swimming, lazing, and enjoying challenging water sports such as jet skiing, windsurfing snorkeling, sailing, and parasailing. The beach has a wide range of accommodations from standard hotels to 5-star hotels and resorts.

How to get there
Located approximately 15 kilometers from the city.

13 Rawai Beach

Location : South of Phuket, Mueang District Rawai Beach Rawai beach is well know as palm-fringed beach, located at the south end of Phuket island. The beach can not swimming but has a beautiful views from many nearby islands and has many fresh seafood restaurants in lowest price than other beach on Phuket. There are some resorts and restaurants available here. A long-tail boat rental service is also available to nearby islands.

How to get there
Rawai Beach is located 17 kms. from Phuket Town on the south-tip of Phuket Island and 7 kms. west of Chalong Circle.

14 Surin Beach

Location : Thalang District Surin Beach Surin beach has clear water, beautiful white sand, is lined with tall casuarina trees, curving bay, beneath the foothills north of Kamala. Surin beach is home to Phuket's first golf course, a nine-hole course laid out more than sixty years ago during the reign of King Rama VII. It is now largely in disuse except as a park. The steep incline of the beach, turbulent water, and big waves make Hat Surin a dangerous place to swim.

How to get there
Surin beach is situated 24 kilometres from town. Patong is 25 minutes drive and it takes not more than 35 minutes to reach Phuket International Airport.

1 Bon Island

Location : South of Phuket  Bon Island Bon Island (Koh Bon) is a small limestone island located south of Phuket that is well known for its long- stretch of white sandy beach set in a secluded tropical ambience. It is just one kilometer from Rawai Beach. It is the site of some excellent dive sites. The island itself is basically a private island managed by the Evason Phuket Resort, although the beach is supposed to be public. There is one restaurant outside of the resort. The island is somewhat famous for its manta rays.

How to get there
Take a long-tail boat from Rawai Beach about 30 minutes or from Laem Ka.

2 Coral Island

Location : South East of Phuket Coral Island Coral Island, known locally as Koh Hae which divide to two main beaches, Long Beach and Banana Beach. Coral Island is a beautiful getaway for snorkeling and there is also some sailing, para-sailing, and water skiing. The island is managed by the Coral Island Resort, which owns the island’s only hotel.

How to get there
By speedboats (15-20 minutes) or long-tailed boats (45 minutes) at Chalong Bay or Rawai Pier.

3 Keaw Island

Location : South of Promthep Cape Keaw Island Kaew Island is clearly seen ahead of the sea when overlooking from Promthep Cape or from Rawai Beach. The island comprises Kaew Yai Island and Kaew Noi Island while Kaew Yai Island is more attracting because of its beautiful sandy beach, good swimming spot and delightful atmosphere. There is the limitated Footprint of the Lord Buddha housed on the island. It is appropriate for tourists who do not like to spend much time sailing across the sea. It is not an expensive trip, peaceful surroundings and good swimming area.

How to get there
Keaw Island is located about 3 kilometers from Rawai Beach and take the boat about 10 minutes.

4 Lone Island

Location : South of Phuket Lone Island Lone Island (Koh Lone) is a small paradise mountainous island close to Phuket. The mainly Muslim inhabitants engage in fishing, rubber and coconut planting. There is a long stretch of beach on the northeast coast. Boats to Lon Island leave daily in the early morning from Chalong Pier.

How to get there
Just 20 minutes by regular passenger boat from Chalong Bay.

5 Mai Thon Island

Location : South East of Phuket Mai Thon Island Mai Thon Island (Koh Mai Thon) is a small peaceful island which famous in unique corals, crystal clear water and relaxing ambience. The island is ideal for diving, swimming or even fishing. Accommodations are available for those wishing to stay in this enchanting, secluded den. A one-day trip is also provided by travel agencies.

How to get there
Take the boat from Rawai Beach.

6 Nakha Island

Location : East of Phuket Nakha Island This small, quiet island with fine sandy beaches lies just off Phuket's northeast shore. Waters are suitable for swimming. One item of interest at Nakha Noi Island not found in many other places is its pearl farm. Boats can be hired from Po Bay Pier, off Pa Khlok Rd., for travel to Nakha Noi Island, and package trips are available at tour agencies, generally including lunch and a visit to the pearl farm.

How to get there
Long-tail boats can be hired for day trips at Po Bay Pier on the northeast coast of Phuket. Or you can include these islands in a tour; tours can be booked at tour desks or travel agents in Phuket.

7 Phi Phi Island

Location : South East of Phuket Phi Phi Island Phi Phi Island is the collective name for a cluster of six islands included in the Mu Koh Phi Phi-Nopparathara National Park : Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Ley, Bamboo Island , Yung Island, Bida Nok, and Bida Nai. Only 45 minutes from Phuket, Koh Phi Phi features towering limestone cliffs that shelter white, sandy beaches and spectacular, aquamarine bays filled with exotic marine life. How to get there
Ferries leave from Phuket daily at 09:00 am., 11:00 am., and 02:30 pm. several times a day (11:00 am. during high-season only). Tickets can be purchased on-line or on the dock, from tourist offices, most local guest houses and hotels.

8 Taphao Yai & Taphao Noi Island

Location : West of Phuket Taphao Island Tapao Island divide to be Tapao Yai Island and Tapao Noi Island which Tapao Yai Island has fertile forests where a lot of hornbills inhabit. A stone beach with nature trail around the island and up to the hill can overlook the scenery of Sire Island.

Tapao Noi Island is the location of the Southern Sea level Measuring Station, so the island’s visitors need to ask for permission prior to their visit.The ancient lighthouse of more than 100 years is the island’s distinctive feature, the first lighthouse of the South for navigation aid. The lighthouse area is also the wonderful viewpoint. The island’s beach is not long but very clean and white to be a swimming area. There is also the wide plane stone beach caused by the long period of pilled up coral reefs. Accommodation is available on these island.

How to get there
Just 10 minutes by ferry from Makham bay Phuket.

9 Siray Island

Location : East of Phuket Siray Island Separated from the mainland of Phuket by the Khlong Tha Chin, a shallow mangrove swamp, this twenty square kilometer island is connected by a causeway to the city. Wat Ko Sire, on the hill, has a large Reclining Buddha and provides fine views of the surroundings. Phuket's largest settlement of Sea Gypsies, or Chao Ley, are on Sire Island at Leam Tuk-kae. Swimming is not present because of the muddy bottom. There are some popular seafood restaurants on the eastern shore.

How to get there
Siray Island is located about 4 kilometers from the city to drive through to Sri Suthat Road.

10 Raya Yai (or Racha) Islands

Location : South of Phuket Koh Racha Koh Racha consists of Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi which located south of Phuket. Koh Racha Yai (Big Racha) is the large island which has an enchanting beach located on the west between the valleys that resembles horseshoes. The area is known as Ao Bungalow which is famous for its white powdery beach and crystal clear water. Visitors can marvel at the delightful panoramic view of the whole island from the vantage point at the peak of the mountain located south of the bay. Koh Racha Yai is the ultimate place to explore the wonders of the underwater world, especially at Ao Siam, Ao Tue and Khon Kae. Accommodations are available.

Koh Racha Noi (Small Racha) is located just 10 kilometers from Koh Racha Yai. Originating from the accumulation of coral stones, shores are surrounded with deep waters, excellent visibility, white sand and large numbers of vibrant colourful reef fish. Koh Racha Noi has more rocky hills than beaches, thus the island is more suitable for fishing.

How to get there
Koh Racha Yai : Speedboats, Dive boats, Fishing boats, and Large boats transfers from Chalong Pier or Rawai Pier, and the trip takes from 45 minutes to more than an hour depending on the boat and the season.

Koh Racha Noi : To get there contact a charter boat at Chalong Bay or Rawai Bay, or go to travel agent for details on package tours to the islands. By long-tailed boat the travel time is about two hours. Larger boats operated by tour companies will make the trip in about one hour. Travel to Raya Islands is restricted to dry season and periods when the monsoon is not blowing.

11 Yao Island

Location : Phang Nga Bay Yao Island Yao islands are located in the south of Phang-nga Bay, 42 kilometers away from the mainland of Phang-nga Province, Thailand. It is a district of Phang-nga Province with a total area of 141.067 square kilometer, consisting of 44 islands. Of these islands, the two most important ones are Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai, which is twice the size of Koh Yao Noi. Koh Yao Noi is the center of government with all government offices located there. Koh Yao has many tourist attractions that still maintain their natural beauty along with many beautiful beaches. The people of this island lead a simple life bond with the sea along with making a living from the sea. Apart from this, not far from the coast of Koh Yao are many exotic islands, which increase the beauty of Koh Yao.

Yao Noi Island
is one of the largest islands surrounding Phuket and can be reached in one hour by boat from Phuket. The island is situated within a very short distance to the well-known destinations of Bileh Islands, Krabi and Phang Nga (James Bond islands). The tourism has not been developed on a large scale on the island, Thai life style remained unchanged and peace and privacy abound. South of Yao Noi Island it has its twin island, Yao Yai Island, which is even bigger and wilder and offers wonderful spots for trekking. Interesting tourist attractions on Yao Noi Island are Tha Khao Beach, Pa Sai Beach, Klong Jaak Beach and Kian Bay.

Yao Yai Island
is the largest island in Yao Island District and has many interesting beaches, such as Thi Kud Bay, Klong Son Bay, Sai Bay, Lo Pa Raed beach, Laan Bay, Hin Kong Bay, and Laem Nok Og. Lo Jaak pier is an important pier from Yao Island to Phuket. The water at the pier is clear and schools of fish swim near the bridge at the pier. Visitors can see the production of dried anchovies (pla ching chang) here. There are inexpensive bungalows on the island along with home-stay accommodation (Yao Yai Village) with the local people, who make a living by fishery or agriculture, to learn their lifestyle. Beautiful beaches on Yao Yai Island are Loh Jaak Beach, Loh Pa Raed Beach, Klong Son Beach, Thi Kud Bay and Lan Bay.

How to get there
Long-tail boat ferries make daily trips to Yao Noi from Bang Rong Pier on the east coast of Phuket. From the airport, a taxi will take you to the pier in 25 minutes. To get to the pier, take route 4027 east from the Heroines' Monument, then turn right at the sign for Bang Rong (or Bangrong) and follow along for a few kilometers.
